South Africa is a beautiful country with
an amazing wildlife and a well
established and safe tourist network.
The cities are big, vibrant and
exciting, busy with the typical life of
any metropolis anywhere in the world.
But within each city and town are the
townships, large ghettos, that house
hundreds of thousands of migrant workers
and unemployed families. Passing through
a typical impoverished township, one of
the first things you will notice ?
beyond the obvious startling poverty ?
is the abundance of cats and dogs.
Within these high density and socially
complicated environments cats and dogs
breed freely and live with no
supervision or control. Dog fighting is
popular and animal abuse is widespread
and de-criminalized.
There is network of welfare
organizations in South Africa dedicated
to this massive problem with 30 Animal
Shelters in the Cape Town area alone.
Each of these organisations receives and
rescues an average of 40 to 100 animals
per month. The need for suitable homes
for these rescues is acute and extensive
exposure is the only way to increase
adoptions and save lives. The only
alternative to re-homing is euthanasia
and due to the high numbers of incoming
animals and the limits of shelter
accommodation, the monthly numbers are
staggering.
Unfortunately a substantial amount of
South Africans still buy their pets from
non-registered (backyard) breeders or
pet shops thus exacerbating the
overpopulation problem. Many South
Africans don?t know how many dogs are
available for adoption. With all this in
mind, FurKidz was created.
FurKidz is a non-profit cyber-shelter,
founded to assist all animal shelters
across South Africa in rapidly re-homing
their animals.
Volunteers visit all the shelters, take
pictures and film short video clips of
their animals, write pet profiles,
upload the information and post
fundraising events and general news.
Regular newsletters are sent out, pet
related articles written and posted and
a forum is maintained.
An online library and a classified
section are continually expanded and
FurKidz hosts and supports fundraising
events and adoption days.
Anforderungen
FurKidz needs volunteers/ interns to
fill the following positions:
Position 1: ?Photographer? / ?Picture
and Video Editor?
Main Tasks:
- Visit animal welfares throughout
the Western Cape in teams of two
- Take pictures / film video clips
of shelter animals
- Picture and Video Editing
- Uploading of pictures and clips
Required Skills:
- Excellent photographic skills
- Photographic schooling not
essential, but proven ability to take
good action shots a necessity
- Picture and video editing skills
- Computer literate
- Active, motivated and driven to
always get the ?best shot?
- Patient
- Driver`s license
Position 2: ?Animal Behaviorist /
Handler?
Main Tasks:
- Visit animal welfares throughout
the Western Cape
- Handle / manage / interact with
shelter animals
- Assess shelter animals
(personality, breed, age etc.)
- Write pet profiles
- Uploading of collated
information
Required Skills:
- Well versed in English
- Love and feel for animals
- Ability to quickly and easily
adjust to different animals e.g. calm
hyperactive animals down, gain trust of
shy animals
- Ability to handle animals and
get them ?into position? for best
picture results
- Ability to assess animals and
their personalities, breeds etc.
- Excellent writing skills
Position 3: ?News Editor?
Main Task:
- Write pet related articles
- Prepare and post daily features
- Prepare and post daily news and
events
- Find, collate, write newsletter
content
- Prepare newsletter
Required Skills:
- Affinity to internet and
computer work
- Computer literate
- Proficient in MS Office
- Excellent research skills
- Excellent writing skills
- Well versed in English
- Design skills are a plus
Position 4: ?Administrator?
Main Task:
- To keep database up to date
- Constant contact with shelters
and other pet owners via email/phone wrt
adoptions/new arrivals etc.
- Receiving and handling of email
enquiries

posting of ads
- Administering the Lost & Found
section

- Preparing regular adoption
updates

- Well versed in English
- Excellent telephonic skills and
manners
- Very organized, motivated and
driven
